ABSTRACT

In the name of Allah the most gracious and merciful. Undoubtedly, the Holy Quran is not a book of science but science can never dismiss the truth of Al-Quran as it is accordingly, can be proven, time and again, without fail. Sheikh Tantavi Al-Johri (1870-1940AD), is one of the renowned scholars of Tafsir who had studied the scientific attributes of the Holy Quran.  He wrote Al-Jawahir fi tafsir-ul Quran. There are scientific discussions and discoveries regarding cosmic verses of Al-Quran in this Tafsir along with the traditional details of all the verses. Sheikh Tantavi also included the other modern knowledge like philosophy, medicine, physics, astronomy, logic, mathematics biology etc.in Al-Jawahir fi tafsir-ul Quran.

When Sheikh Tantavi completed his Tafsir, he reminded the Muslim to their glorious past and writes praying words in this style. “I hope that Allah will assist this ummah by dint of this religion of blessings and the Muslims will adopt the path defined and determined through this Tafsir and it is also expected that this book will motivate the Muslims towards different knowledge and skills.  Such personalities will be produced as will surpass the British in the field of agriculture, medicine, minerals, mathematics and astronomy etc. Sheikh Tantavi also deliberated on verses over laws and morality as well as the uniqueness of the creatures like the plants, animals, heavens and earth. Accordingly, this paper provides an overview of the bibliography of sheikh Tantavi and his Tafsir “Al-Jawahir fi tafsir-ul Quran”.
